Ames, IA show was soooo weak! You cancel twice and then play a seven song set???? I'll give you credit for the verve cover in the middle of Bunnies...that was sweet, but you just rushed through the set and after seeing you twice in 2001 I have to say I'm really disappointed with the s*** you have been playing. You peaked in 2004 and everybody who is expecting a great solo show...take my word for it. IT ISN"T WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Howie.... seriously, I love you... I really really love you. But I am truly disappointed in the show that you put on in Ames. I waited forever to finally see you perform....since you cancelled twice on Ames...only to hear you play like a 50 minute show. I was sad, I thought that since you made everyone wait for soooo damn long that you would put on the best show ever, man was I wrong. I mean the songs you played were good, but I saw you many times before, Omaha at the Waiting Room, and Qwest in Minneapolis (way back in the day) and those shows are nothing like what I saw tonight.... I am not sure if the person who yelled for you to play Radiohead, or maybe all the people taking video of you, but thats not something you should hurt all your die hard fans for. Honestly, I have to go to work in morning, I wasted my sleep time for your show.... bummer. Maybe next time, because I will all ways go see you again when you are in town, just because I know how great you can be. Sorry for being harsh, but I was really really disappointed. Sad

I was at your concert in Ames, and I have to agree with the post above. I was disappointed. I am a HUGE fan and was so excited to see you live for the first time. This was the 3rd time that I drove to Ames - the first two times I got there only to find out the show was canceled. But nothing would have stopped me from coming to see you. I totally get it if you were upset by the quiet crowd, but not everybody was. I was in the loud group up front to your left. You referred to us a couple of times like "o.k. any else besides these guys?" I love your music and could see your play list and you didn't get anywhere near the end of it. When you left without saying anything, not even a thank you, I was sure you were coming back. The girl next to me, who was a die hard fan and had seen you live 8 times, said you weren't, that you were pissed and wouldn't come back - and she was right. I had so hoped to meet you - but instead you stormed off. If you felt like you were teaching your audience a lesson, what you really did was punish your die hard fans. I bought Sound the Alarm the first day it was available. I hound our local radio station to play you on a regular basis - check it out - Star 102.5 on facebook. You will see my posts where I thank them everytime they play you and I encourage them to play more. Regardless whether or not you wanted to be there - there were a lot of us who had really did and were really excited to see you and it was so disappointing to have you snub your own fans.

BUMMER...Howie Day had two ridiculous nights in a row!

My fiance was so excited we were going to see you in Minneapolis - he'd been talking about how amazing your unique skills were for days. He has seen you at Fine Line before and RAVED about you, I unfortunately can't say the same about your performance (or lack thereof) tonight.

I completely understand you were upset because your equipment failed 3 times, especially in the middle of the best part of GHOST but c'mon man you have to be A BIG BOY and make do! We would have been totally cool if you'd gone acoustic!! You came out and seemed a little upset about something at the jump, then you complained about the vibe in the place, audience participation...blah, blah, blah. Your attitude was crap from the start.

There were plenty of "die hards" standing beside us who agreed you should be pissed off but when you stormed off-stage we thought you would surely be back....NOPE, you were gone! There were also a few people who said you should have apologized for canceling your previously scheduled show for no reason.

We all have bad days but when you're in the entertainment business and there are people coming out to support you, suck it up and play. Sorry to say but that was my first and probably last Howie Day show. Lots of us demand our money back.

Horrible Minneapolis show. All anyone around us could say was "what a crybaby!"

Everyone has a show or 2 like these though. However, no excuse for leaving everyone hanging. I mean, it's a small venue, it's a Wednesday night, you had cancelled once, you came out with a raspy voice with MAYBE a 1 octave range. Not a big deal if you're Johnny Cash, but your falsettos and amazing looping are what make you a great musician and performer.

I've been a fan since you performed for FREE at the Memorial Union in Madison, WI (I believe in 2000-2001) After that, I started promoting your tour. I contacted your management. I handed out stickers, pens, posters, pins, etc.

What you did last night was pathetic and disgraceful. There's no justification. Sit in your tour bus and pout. I thought this was a valiant attempt to leave all that crap in the past (locking girls in your bus bathroom, throwing cell phones, being an ass hole), but after last night, it's apparent that you have lost control of your career.

I hope your crew/manager helps you get your s*** together. You're talented, but like the other posts have been saying: talent ain't s*** unless you have a good relationship with your fans.

When you play "Be There" and say you "hate this song" repeatedly........

When you constantly b**** about the crowd with this "how dare you" attitude.......

When you complain about people not singing along to Collide......

Sad day for Howie Day.

I have contemplated writing a review to this show. I truly don't know where to begin. I have stuck with you Howie for many years. I'm even surprised that these comments are still on here after when you canceled these shows originally and people posted angry comments about the lack of communication they were removed. Obviously you were not feeling well In all of my shows both in Minnesota and many other states was probably the worst I had heard you. Could defiantly tell you were struggling and I know that you have been having throat issues. I also heard that you bus had broke down as well. Yes your DL4 crapped out on you during Ghost. Finally yes no one really sang along to Collide. So lets see here Minneapolis a city that I can't remember the last time he didn't sell out a show here. Not to mention it was a very old Howie crowd and sorry Howie we love you and your success but we don't come to hear Collide. We all know it was your biggest hit and brought you a huge crowd following. My question to you is where are they now? Thats right they are no where to be found and when you ask them what there favorite looped song is they look at you with a blank stare. You can cry about the crowd not being into the show but I completely disagree. I can't remember the last time I was at a concert and it being so quiet. Not in a bad way, the fact is Mr. Day that everyone there last night was silent because they are your die hard fans. They wanted to hear you, not some random guy yelling random crap at you in the middle of a song. The crowd was with you, a lot of people yelled out some of your classic songs and classic covers. Such as the request for your cover of In the Sun to in which your reply was "thats a blast from the past." I was surrounded by old school fans who when I mention Archive.org we all know what it is. We talk about your shows at the quest and how you opened of Torri Amos and we all left after you opened because we were there to see you. I am sorry you had a bad day, I get it and in all honesty Howie if you would have just came back on stage and said you were having a bad day you probably would have had a warm send off. Nope you just said to your fans who waited over 6 years for a new CD stood by you while you got your personal affairs back in order to have you come out and bash the songs that you don't like on your new CD. When I asked when of you crew what was up there response was he almost played an hour should be great full for that and you were tired. I forked out 80 dollars for my ticked to hear you play half a set. It was your last concert of the tour I was expecting you to let it all hang out and play for a couple hours. Sadly due to archive and my following of you on twitter etc... Know you have been playing two hour sets. I think you owe your life long fans to apologize to both Ames and Minneapolis. If not my friend I think you will be surprised to see how few tickets you sell the next time you come back. Your living the life as a musician and you are crazy talented. But at the end of the day the people who allow you to continue doing it is myself and your fans.

Wow. People are harsh. I'm surprised these people consider themselves fans. If your best friend was having a really hard day would you tell them "you suck"? I thought a fan meant you "supported" the musician, not ripped them down. I can't begin to imagine how challenging it would be, to be living in a bus, performing night after night. Then when you get on stage, you find a ton of people fighting for the front row, so they can hold their cell phone up in your face the entire time you are performing so they can show it to their friends later. Then while singing a song from your heart, that you are trying to feel after performing it about a zillion times, and since it's not the one that everyone wants to hear right then, they turn and have a conversation with their friend, or start sending text messages. Energy is contagious. If I saw my favorite musician struggling onstage for whatever reason, (that you couldn't possibly know what kind of personal struggle that may be going on in their life) I would send them as much support, love and positive energy as I could. Not judge them, cross my arms then rip them apart. I choose to see a talented, so so so talented, performer, songwriter, guitar player and musician. I feel grateful to hear ANY song by Howie live. If it is not up to the highest standards, or you see a struggle behind his eyes, or his music, or his performance, even more reason to show the love.

I am a fan. Will ALWAYS be a fan. Even if the set is shorter then I would have liked. Or the song I wanted to hear wasn't on the set list. I'm writing this to show my love and support for Howie. If he is struggling, I'm choosing him to support him even more, not tell him all the things that are wrong with him.

I connect to you as a musician/person Howie, I hope you feel/felt that, and want to say thank you, for you.

Rebecca

I post this in support of Howie.

I am sorry for the people who were disappointed by the shows they saw...My heart breaks for Howie and whatever his battles may be. I saw Howie in Boulder right before he had to cancel some shows. It wasn't the best show I had ever seen but like the last post, I was happy and grateful and excited to see him Live.

After almost eight years of being an "old" fan, and Howie is still the artist I am most dedicated to, I wish Howie all the support and clarity to follow whatever path he needs to follow. I will always be a HUGE fan, and any time I need a little Live-Howie-Solo-Fix I just listen to one of the many downloads from archive.org, it will always feed my soul.
Luv U Howie....

I agree with the person above. Yes, it sucks that the last few shows weren't the best he has done and I understand being a little angry, but like most here, I've been a die-hard fan for years... and being like, "oh my god, Howie Day sucks!" is just ridiculous. Put yourself in his position, living on the road, show after show after show. You never know what he may be going through personally either. Cut him some slack, he has gone through a lot and he is still one of the best musicians out there. I was able to see him in Philly last month and it was a good show. I wish him a lot of luck and hopefully whatever he may be going through he sorts it out.

I like many of you have been a fan for several years. I have seen Howie Day live 4 times and have always had an amazing experience. His last show in Minneapolis was fun while it lasted, but I was slightly disappointed. I can't relate to his "troubles" but I can understand that people go through tough times and not everything works out as planned. What bothers me is that he just gave up, even after the whole audience was cheering for him to come back on stage. So what if there were some technical difficulties... true fans don't care about those things, we just wanted to hear him sing, and know that he WANTED to sing for us. You don't go to a basketball game and see the players give up and walk off the court at half-time because they aren't winning...they give their best. To me, artists sell not only their music, but the security that they are good people and the type of person their fans would genuinely adore. I still have strong support for Howie and think he is a GREAT artist. He has a very special talent , my heart and soul are touched everytime I hear his music. I hope that he is doing well and can prove to his true fans that he still loves to share that talent with us.

I think Mr. Day has forgotten how valuable it is to have a solid fan base. I don't know how many of you agree, but I feel that he's lost the passion to perform and it isn't fun for him anymore. Back in the day he joked, laughed, and play with enthusiasm that attracted many of us to his music. He hadn't "made it" at that point, but the fire burned bright and we all saw it coming. Now we hear the same recycled jokes and stories, almost as if he's reading from a script. I hope for his sake, problems resolve and he finds the drive inside of him again. Maybe it happens to all musicians and touring becomes more of a burden than a pleasure, but having the opportunity to share his music with the world is a great privilege and I hope he remembers that.

This email might seem a bit harsh, but I feel like this man is throwing his career down the toilet. It would be a shame to see such talent wasted. Good luck Howie.

I agree with everyone's comments above. I appreciate people sharing their feelings about the Minneapolis and Iowa shows because I can completely relate. I'm just so torn over this situation. I'm let down. I'm sad. I'm angry. So much of me is extremely disappointed in Howie's Iowa and Minneapolis performances. And another part of me, the compassionate side of me, is sad for Howie, because he is CLEARLY struggling.

I feel like there are really so many excuses and justifications we, as fans, can make for Howie. Where do we draw the line? When has he let us down too much? I was a fan before he was famous. I was a fan when he stopped recording and touring for 6 years, I was a fan despite the reports of him locking girls in the bathroom, assaulting airline staff. I looked past it all. When he began touring again, I had so much hope, happiness and excitement for him.

I am one of the people who was at the Minneapolis show that he walked out on. I have supported him through his entire, bumpy, career, and continued to support him through his awkward Minneapolis show. Then, he walked out on us. Without any explanation, but to leave us to believe that WE let HIM down. I found myself questioning what we, as fans, as an audience, did wrong to make him bail on us. When really, he is the one having the issues, and chose to take those issues out on the people who have supported him the most. I take huge offense to that, and I am struggling to continue to support him.

I am really sad as I write this, because I don't WANT to give up on Howie. But, there comes a point where enough is enough. If his manager or SOMEONE would give an inkling of an apology or explanation, it would greatly help the situation. I appreciate the couple of comments above who are defending and supporting Howie because I need that inspiration to prevent me from giving up on him. However most of those people did not attend the Iowa or Minneapolis shows in which they experienced that rejection from Howie. It would be easy to support him if I did not witness those shows first hand. Artist/fan relationship is a two-way street. We support and love him, and he supports and appreciates us. I haven't been feeling that with Howie lately.

Believe me, I want him to succeed...but he's gotta wake up first. Maybe he needs these comments as a wake up call. Or maybe he needs a boost of confidence? If so, what can we, as fans, do to get that message across to him? That we're still here, that he's still amazing...

In a quick response I never said Howie sucked I very much said how talented he is. If you were at the Minneapolis show you would know that there weren't people sitting with their cell phones in his face. It was actually a very intimate show with tables etc... Like I had said as well is all he had to do was say something. He literally walked off the stage in the middle of a song with the crowd cheering him and telling him that they didn't care that his DL4 had crapped out on him. We continued for him to come back and finish the set which he could have easily done. We all love to see him loop but he just as well could have come out and just played his guitar and everything would have been fine. We all understand the pressures but its more of the feeling that he left in a way that said he didn't care. Yet all of us old school fans have cared and stuck by his side over all the years. Is it too much to ask that he would at least stand by us and give a quick sorry?

I wasn't at any of the last three shows, but I have to say my piece. Howie has been through some hard times in the past and definitely has taken some extended breaks to reflect and record, but let's not tear him apart because he's had a few bad days. Who hasn't?? I know if I were being scrutinized for every little thing I did at my job everyday for MONTHS, I'd be in trouble. If you throw in living on a moving tour bus, battling illness, and rarely seeing friends or family, I'd probably go insane. I think most people would.
When I see Howie live, I feel that he really does pour his heart and soul into his playing. I was at one of the New York shows, and it was fantastic. It sounds like things stopped working at the end of the tour, he didn't feel well, and he was a little frustrated by some of the crowd responses (talking through his new stuff, screaming for Africa, etc). But how many times has Noel or Liam Gallagher walked offstage during an Oasis show? So many musicians act shi**y toward their audiences, or show up drunk, or make unreasonable demands, or throw tantrums, and they're always forgiven. Howie is sensitive and, I think, a perfectionist, but those are two of the reasons I love his music. I hope he can get through this with the support of his fans and continue to write the great songs we all love so much.

Howie, as I'm sure you've heard from your other fans, a lot of people weren't really pleased with the Ames and Minneapolis shows. Be it a few off nights or crowds that didn't respond as expected, these shows didn't portray you in the best of lights. That being said, I hope all is well, and hope to see you out there again soon. You've got an immense talent that the world needs to see, and a plethora of fans who appreciate everything you do. Finally, a little advice from Winston Churchill: if you're going through hell, keep going. We'll all still be out there to support you when the lights go down. Take care.

Were seriously deleting comments now? Get it together Howie...

I love your music!
Please come to England to do a tour, I know loads of people who would come.

The lyrics are so awesome..and I love them! I absolutely love this album, it's the only one on my iPod that I've gone through and put the work into adding the lyrics onto my iPod for, but Second go isn't up for me to get it. Please put it up?

Had never heard of Howie until his 2004 opener for Nickel Creek in Birmingham, AL. My initial reaction was curiosity, but as he continued his set I was mesmerized. I absolutely fell in love with his music that night. I've been surprised that the radio-ready versions aren't as good as the live performance. It makes me sad to read the comments here that indicate the live shows are not what they used to be. I'd love to see him perform again if he comes through Raleigh-Durham sometime, but it's tough to afford concert tickets these days if all the buzz about a performer's shows (and attitude) has become negative. I remember attending a Smashing Pumpkins concert in the '90's and Billy Corgan was a total douchebag to the audience and the venue. Things like that really change fans' perspectives. I really hope to hear that Howie Day is doing better soon. He's such a talent.

you've really become a great inspiration to me and I've took up songwriting because of you and that is now my dream. All I want to say is thankyou. I was finally about to go pick it up a couple of days ago, and can't stop listening to it and I can't stop reading the lyrics.
